What does the tricone it code “IADC537” mean?

It is a standardized classification code for drilling equipment, specifically tricone roller drill bits, established by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).

The 1st digit means what lithology it is for, in some extent it also means “bit type” or “cutter/tooth type”. “4-6 ” means T.C.I. (Tungsten Carbide Insert) drill bit. Digit “5”‘s working lithology description is “Medium hard with harder more abrasive steaks“.

The 2nd digit “3” means the lithology grade (1,2,3,4). The bigger the grade number is, the harder the ground layer is.

The  3rd digit “7” means internal structure feature of the tri-cone bit. “7” means “Gage Protection and Jounal Bearing“.

How is the tricone bit 6 1/2″ IADC537 typically used in trenchless drilling or directional drilling?

“537” is one the most used bit codes for rock layers. If you are drilling SOFT rocks (not that hard or abrasive), “537” is right for you. Besides, as “IADC537″ is broadly used, so it is massively produced as well. You can easily find goods from your supplier.

The size of  6 1/2″ refers to the diameter of the bit’s head. 6 1/2” bit commonly works with 95mm mud motor, 73 or 89mm drill rods and a drill rig with pullback force less than 60 tons.

How to classify a dull bit with IADC code?

Understanding how to grade drill bits using IADC standards is essential. It helps engineers and sales teams communicate clearly and decide if a drill bit is right for the job or if they need to consider other options.
