What does “IADC637” mean?
It is a standardized classification code for drilling equipment, specifically tricone roller drill bits, established by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).
The 1st digit means what lithology it is for, in some extent it also means “bit type” or “cutter/tooth type”. “4-6 ” means T.C.I. (Tungsten Carbide Insert) drill bit. Digit “6”‘s working lithology description is “Medium hard with harder more abrasive steaks“.
The 2nd digit “3” means the lithology grade (1,2,3,4). The bigger the grade number is, the harder the ground layer is.
The 3rd digit “7” means internal structure feature of the tri-cone bit. “7” means “Gage Protection and Jounal Bearing“.
How is the bit 6 1/2″ IADC637 typically used in trenchless drilling or directional drilling?
“637” is one the most used bit codes for rock layers. If you are drilling rocks (not that hard or abrasive), “637” is right for you. Besides, as “IADC637″ is broadly used, so it is massively produced as well. You can easily find goods from your supplier. This bit was equiped with metal-seal bearing which serves longer in tough conditions!
The size of 6 1/2″ refers to the diameter of the bit’s head. 6 1/2” bit commonly works with 95mm mud motor, 73 or 89mm drill rods and a drill rig with pullback force less than 60 tons.

Difference between rubber-seal tricone bit and metal-seal tricone bit
Tri-cone drill bits with metal-sealed bearing structure are broadly used in very tough or complicated formations. Compared with rubber-sealed structure, a metal-sealed tricone bit bears heavier W.O.B. and survives longer in different conditions. On the other hand, better performance means higher price. Metal-sealed tri-cone drill bits are generally 30% more expensive than rubber-sealed ones. This is an approximate price gap, which really depends on factories and drill bit size.
How to distinguish metal-seal ticone bit from rubber-seal tricone bit
From the appearance, it is really hard to differentiate the two types. Because the bearing struture is invisiable!
But we still could check the bottom printing to identity whether it is a metal-seal roller bit or a rubber-seal one. Check the figure 2. below.

“XM” means it is a metal-seal tricone bit. “M” mean “metal”.
“XA” means it is a rubber-seal one.
Of course, beside from the bottom, you can also check the model info from the outer package. But sometimes you can not remember which is its own package.
Other Q&A
Q: What are your products always available in stock, or those always need time to manufacture?
A: Typically, they are tri-cone bits. We stock from popular models directly from KINGDREAM factory, like 6”/6 ½”/8 ½”/9 1/2”/12 ¼” IADC537/617/637.
On the other hand, hole openers(reamers) always need to be customized. Because customers’ drill rigs vary so much, we need customize the thread types for them on the reamers. Especially for rock reamers, the customization not only comes from the thread type, but also from the IADC code and the distribution density of the roller cones. Lastly, sometimes we need design the reamers according to customer’s drilling plan, especially the design of centralizer size.
As for other products, it depends. Mud motor is more like to be available as there’s not so much customization. Kindly inquire from us if you want to check our stock status.
Q: What a brand is KINGDREAM?
A: KD is a subsidiary of SINOPEC, China’s state-owned oil company. It was and is ranked the 2st among the top 500 companies all over the world.
KINGDREAM is the top-tier company for drill bit design and manufacture. Including tri-cone bit (Roller drilling bit) and PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) bit and other drill bits.
Q: What you’re marketing are genuine KINGDREAM products?
A: Of course. If you find we sell fake KD drill bits, we’d compensate you 10 times of your commodity value.
