Features of this IADC127 HDD Tricone Drill Bit

Hardfaced tooth surface and gauge, high cutter exposure and the gauge fitted with compacts. It is suitable for soft with low compressive strength and high drillability, such as shale, clay, saltbed and soft limestone, etc.

How is the bit 9 1/2″ IADC127 typically used in trenchless drilling or directional drilling?

“127” is one the most used bit codes for softer layers. If you are drilling soft and low compressive strength and high drillability, such as shale, clay, saltbed and soft limestone, etc, “127” is right for you. Besides, as “IADC127″ is broadly used, so it is massively produced as well. You can easily find goods from your supplier.

The size of  9 1/2″ refers to the diameter of the bit’s head. 9 1/2” bit commonly works with 172 mud motor, 140mm drill rods and a drill rig with pullback force above 200 tons.

How to distinguish metal-seal hdd ticone bit from rubber-seal hdd tricone bit

From the appearance, it is really hard to differentiate the two types. Because the bearing struture is invisiable!

But we still could check the bottom printing to identity whether it is a metal-seal roller bit or a rubber-seal one. Check the figure 1. below.

bottom printing of roller bit
Figure 1. bottom printing of roller bits

“XM” means it is a metal-seal tricone bit. “M” mean “metal”.

“XA” or “XE” means it is a rubber-seal one.

Of course, beside from the bottom, you can also check the model info from the outer package. But sometimes you can not remember which is its own package.

Other Q&A

Q: Is metal-sealed tricone bit better for tougher or more abrasive formations?

A: Yes. Bearing failure is one of common failures theoretically. Tri-cone bits with metal-sealed bearing last longer in very tough conditions.

Q: In China many people tell me they have composite-sealing bearing drill bits. What is composite sealing?

A: Composite seal is still classified as “rubber seal” in fact. It’s an upgraded sealing structure based on rubber seal, but not same as metal seal. In KINGDREAM’S classification, it’s an evolutionary rubber seal type.

Q: Why is it better to have more roller cones on a rock reamer?

A: The denser the roller cones are on a rock reamer, the less average pressure on each roller cone, the longer serving time they have, the more refined hole shape you get, and the less gas consumed on the drill rig.
